The Things We Do For Family

My cousin just opened a business, and like a good cousin, I "liked" her page on Facebook. Being in PR and design, I also made sure to look at her website to see how she had branded her business.

It is an understatement for me to say that I was a bit shocked, but I also knew that she knows very little about branding, and how important it will become to her business.

Since I had three weeks off from my day job, I knew that I should help her out, just as I would want people to help me out with my business someday. I showed her a very simple website that I created, and told her that if she needed any help that I would be more than happy to assist. Happily, she took me up on the offer!

But now I am in a predicament, I have no clue what direction I want to go in for her logo and webpage. She said that she would like something similar to her current logo, pictured above, but I still am a bit lost on inspiration. I would love any feedback that could be given, she is working hard, and I want to make sure that her business is well represented.

  1. Thats great that you are helping your cousin with her website! I have also been asked by friends and family to design things and I look at it as a way to build my portfolio :)

Look at other websites to get some inspiration, I'm sure you'll come up with something great!

  2. Hi Vanessa! I had a similar situation with a close friend and her boutique's website. I found it helpful to try looking at the site as though I had no familiarity with the company, the product, or the person behind it (which is really hard when it's family or a good friend).

My first impression is that it's unclear what kind of business this is. Kid's Closet sounds like it should be a children's apparel shop, but the only content on the website are tutus and bows. Does she make costumes for kid's dance recitals?

It's really tough for business owners who aren't web savvy to know where to start. It looks like she needs some help in getting all of her content together (other photos of available products, relevant graphics, more testimonials) and finding the best way to make the brand reflect the product. In my admittedly limited experience, clients are only married to something (a font, a color, or a logo) until YOU (the wonderful designer) show them an alternative that's a true improvement :)
